Forest Laws and Practices

Stewardship of Montana's Forest Lands

A number of timber management activities can increase risks to life, property, and resources if not conducted properly. For example, logging slash can pose a wildfire hazard that can threaten communities, while forest practices can cause soil erosion or impair water quality. Montana Forest Practice regulations exist to protect our natural resources for all to enjoy.

Forest Practices Program

DNRC administers several laws that pertain to Forest Practices through the Forest Practices Program. These include the Streamside Management Zone Law and the Fire Hazard Reduction Law. This program also provides information on Best Management Practices (BMPs), which are voluntary operating procedures that reduce soil erosion and water degradation. The Forest Practices Program has information on laws, necessary forms, and guides.
