Aggregate resources on Trust Lands are managed and administered through the Minerals Management Bureau. Operators must have the appropriate permits through both the Department of Environmental Quality and Trust Lands in order to mine aggregate on State of Montana Trust Lands.
A variety of aggregate projects occur on State of Montana Trust Lands. While gravel is the primary resource mined in the aggregate program; There are also agreements for frac sand mining, decorative rock mining, and scoria mining. In FY 2024. the aggregate program totaled over $921,000. Which was a 161% increase from the previous year.
