Community Wildfire Protection Plans

 Creating and regularly updating a CWPP allows a community to:  

1. Influence how land is managed on federal and state lands for wildfire risk reduction, 
2. Identify and map wildfire hazards, 
3. Identify effective wildfire risk mitigation strategies, and 
4. Be eligible for certain nationally competitive grants.  

Is your CWPP up to date? Was your CWPP collaboratively developed? Is the action plan being implemented? Is success being tracked? For a truly wildfire-resilient community, the answer to all these questions should be “yes.” If you answered no to anything above, consider updating your county CWPP. Community Wildfire Protection Plan Grant

Grant Purpose: 

The Montana Department of Natural Resources & Conservation has funding available to help Montana’s counties update and modernize their Community Wildfire Protection Plans (CWPP). This funding is available to counties with:

1. An outdated (>5 years old) CWPP,
2. High wildfire risk, as determined by the Montana Wildfire Risk Assessment, and
3. A commitment to a collaborative update process

The DNRC anticipates awarding up to $60,000 – $100,000 per project. Award amounts may vary due to funding availability and the number and quality of applications received. This grant opportunity opens approximately each March - April.
