DNRC Seeks Public Comment on Petitions to Close Recreation on State Trust Land Near Gallatin Gateway
HELENA, Mont. —The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) has received two citizen-initiated petitions to close tracts of state trust land near Gallatin Gateway to all recreational use. DNRC is accepting public comment on the closure petitions and will hold a public hearing at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, at the Gallatin Gateway Community Center.
The tracts currently allow for recreational use and include areas that are heavily used for target shooting. A firearm restriction was put in place in 2022 for part of one of the tracts.
The public hearing will include a brief presentation with opportunity for public comment. DNRC is accepting written public comment on the closure petitions until June 3, 2026.
The petition process is in administrative rule (36.25.1207 (7) ARM) and requires an objection period. DNRC is holding a public comment period and will review all public comments and facts before issuing a written decision to grant, grant with modifications, or deny each petition on or before July 1, 2026.
