MISSOULA, Mont. — The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) Missoula Unit plans to conduct a broadcast prescribed burn on approximately 47 acres of state trust lands near Kamas Point, pending favorable weather and fuel conditions.

The primary objective of this prescribed burn is to promote western larch regeneration and prepare planting sites for larch in spring of 2026.

Residents in the Potomac Valley and Clinton areas should expect visible smoke north of Interstate-90 during and after burn operations. Please do not call 911. All burning activities are coordinated with the Montana Department of Environmental Quality and Montana Idaho Airshed Group to reduce the impacts of smoke.

Safety remains DNRC’s highest priority. A detailed burn plan has been established, taking into account fuel moisture, temperatures, wind and weather systems to ensure conditions are safe to effectively meet project objectives.

Temporary closures may be implemented during prescribed burning activities and notices will be posted in the area as appropriate. If favorable conditions for smoke dispersal and/or containment are not present, ignition will be postponed until 2026.

DNRC manages Montana’s forested state trust lands to generate long-term sustainable revenue to benefit educational institutions, while promoting healthy, resilient and diverse forests for future generations.
