The company plans to conduct non-mechanized mineral exploration for rare-earth-bearing minerals on three areas near the Montana/Idaho border proposed for State of Montana non-mechanized Land Use Licenses (LULs). The exploration plan advises that efforts will focus on mapping geology and collecting rock chip samples for geochemical multi-element analyses, including rare earth elements. Mapping involves collecting locations of surface outcrops, geologic features, and favorable alteration with a hand-held GPS and then plotting them on topographic maps. Representative samples of rock outcrops will be taken and the samples sent to an accredited laboratory for detailed elemental analyses. Exploration goals include further characterization of the geology and mineral potential of the area and identification of possible lode deposits containing Rare Earth Elements. MT DNRC expects additional work to include sampling of historic prospect pits and collection of some soil samples as part of the non-mechanized mineral exploration. Sampling of rock and soil material would involve use of hand tools, such as rock hammers, trowels, and shovels. Likely initial soil samples will assist in determining if a larger soil-sampling grid could be useful. The proponent plans to reach the licensed areas on foot from the common corner between Sections 21, 22, 27, and 28, T10S, R15W on Frying Pan Road.
