Let Us Help You
Montana has approximately 23 million acres of forested land, and nearly 20% of that land is privately owned. Well-managed woods provide more than just esthetics and recreational benefits. A healthy forest provides wildlife habitat, clean air, and water, improves soil composition, and can yield timber among other benefits for generations to come if managed properly.
Whether you are looking to protect your home and property from the next wildfire or learn how to manage the urban forest on your property, DNRC has all the necessary resources and services to assist you.

Contact Your Local Service Forester
DNRC service foresters provide assistance and expertise to landowners to meet their forest management objectives, including:
- Developing forest stewardship or management plans
- Identifying appropriate cost-share grants and programs
- Providing recommendations on sources of cost-share assistance
- Identifying insect and diseases to make management recommendations
Request a Home Wildfire Risk Assessment
A Home Wildfire Risk Assessment is a free service provided by the DNRC that evaluates your home's vulnerabilities to wildfire. A local fire professional will visit your property to identify potential hazards and recommend specific actions to reduce your wildfire risk.

Forest Pest Management
DNRC's forest pest management program assists landowners and resource managers in identifying and managing forest insects and diseases on their forested properties. We also work to prevent and control non-native invasive insects and diseases that threaten Montana’s forests.
Forest Stewardship
DNRC's forest stewardship program connects Montana landowners, natural resource managers, and communities with the tools needed to actively and sustainably manage their forestland. The stewardship program provides hands-on technical assistance, financial assistance, and educational opportunities.

- Implement voluntary Montana Forest Best Management Practices (BMPs)
- Follow the Streamside Management Zone (SMZ) Law, Slash Law, and the Forest Practice Notification Law
- Improve forest health and create a resilient forest ecosystem through sustainable treatments
Urban & Community Forestry
DNRC's urban and community forestry (UCF) program promotes best management practices in the planting, maintenance, care, and protection of community forests. The UCF program provides technical and financial assistance and educational opportunities for communities to initiate and grow the health of urban forests.
