About the Urban & Community Forestry Program
Urban and community forestry is the care and management of trees in urban settings. Urban forests are dynamic ecosystems that provide environmental services such as energy conservation, better air quality, economic vitality, reduced stormwater runoff, carbon sequestration, and aesthetically enhancing communities.
The Urban & Community Forestry (UCF) Program promotes best management practices in the planting, maintenance, care, and protection of community forests.
What We Do
Technical Assistance
UCF staff provide assistance to more than half of Montana’s communities for tree inventories, tree care and maintenance, and community forest management plans. DNRC urban foresters work directly with communities in selecting, planting, and caring for trees.

Financial Assistance
Through DNRC and our partners, we administer several grants to initiate and grow the health of urban forests. Any entity with a project related to tree planting, management, and local community forestry program development can apply.
Educational Opportunities
Public understanding of the importance and value of community forests is a central goal of the UCF Program. We work with all Montana communities, including schools, local groups, city councils, Tribes, and any entity with an interest in urban forests. We also administer the Tree City USA and Tree Campus USA programs through the National Arbor Day Foundation.
