Flood Study Information

Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) works cooperatively with counties, cities and towns to update and produce new floodplain maps based on priorities and available funds and resources.  

Developing new or updated floodplain maps involves new flood study work and accurate data.  The result is a reliable map of areas prone to flooding.


Understanding the Flood Study Process

Floodplain maps are utilized by emergency responders, the insurance industry, community planners, developers, and mortgage lenders.  The maps are also critical tools for local floodplain managers, and local, state and federal emergency management for communicating and managing flood risk. 

DNRC is currently undertaking several flood studies in Montana in cooperation with Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and local communities.
