2024-2025 Cabin Site Sale Program

Nomination period has closed.

The solicitation period for the 2024-2025 Cabin/Home Site Sale Program has ended. This opportunity was available to current lessees, as well as former lessees who own improvements on their former lease site.

Request for Sale forms were mailed to potentially eligible lessees. To be considered Request for Sale Forms were to be returned to the DNRC and postmarked no later than November 3, 2023. Late or Incomplete forms will not be considered.

DNRC will review lease sites of all respondents and select lots for processing in 2024 and 2025. If your lease site is selected, you will be notified in the spring of 2024 with further instructions and forms needed to confirm your participation in the program. Selection for participation in the 2024-2025 Cabin/Home Site Sales Program does not guarantee the site will be sold.

Changes to the program

During the 68th Regular Session of the Montana legislature, Senate Bill 49 "AN ACT GENERALLY REVISING CABIN SITE SALES; REVISING THE CANCELLATION OF SALE REQUIREMENTS; AMENDING SECTION 77-2-363, MCA" was passed. The following language was added to 77-2-363 MCA: If the land to be sold is a leased cabin or home site as provided in 77-2-318 and the current lessee has initiated the sale as authorized by 77-2-364, the lessee may cancel the sale by giving notice to the department at least 10 days prior to the day of the auction unless another person has deposited a bid bond per subsection (2)(a), at which point the sale cannot be canceled by the lessee.

What does this mean?

The current lessee that has nominated the property for the sale program will not be able to cancel the auction if another person registers for the auction by submitting a bid deposit and executing a purchase agreement with the department.

More Information

  • All previous participants in the sales program who withdrew prior to auction are subject to the new law if selected for participation in the 2024-2025 sales program.
  • The current lessee can still back out of the cabin site sales program prior to registration for bidding opens to the public.
  • The current lessee still has the right to match the highest bid at auction.
  • The changes went into effect immediately after being signed into law on April 24, 2023.
