Compacts in Negotiations
In 2009 the Commission is focusing on negotiating compacts with the Confederated Salish & Kootenai Tribes in the hopes that this settlements will be ready to submit to the Legislature in 2013. The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service National Bison Range Compact was passed by the 2009 Legislature. The Blackfeet Compact was approved by the Blackfeet Tribal Business Council and the Commission and was passed by the 2009 Legislature. The Commission and staff are working on federal legislation for the Fort Belknap (2001) and Blackfeet (2009) compacts, which they hope to submit to Congress. The Crow Tribe (1999) compact federal legislation was introduced to Congress in February 2009.
