Public comment sought on draft rule for Sage Grouse grant program

HELENA, Mont – The Montana Sage Grouse Oversight Team is seeking public comment on a proposed rule for implementation of the Sage Grouse Stewardship Fund Grant Program.

“The purpose of the Stewardship Fund is to maintain, enhance, restore, expand, or benefit sage grouse habitat and populations, “ said Carolyn Sime, Sage Grouse Conservation Program Manager. “It is a central component of Montana’s Greater Sage Grouse Conservation Strategy. The proposed rule establishes the process the Oversight Team will use in implementing this portion of the 2015 Montana Greater Sage Grouse Stewardship Act.”

The Montana Legislature created the grant program as a source of competitive funding to facilitate free-market mechanisms for voluntary, incentive based conservation on private lands, and public lands as needed, in habitats designated as necessary to conserve sage grouse and maintain state management.

The public comment period opened Dec. 10, 2015, and will run through 5 p.m. Jan. 22, 2016. A copy of the draft rule is available on the Secretary of State’s Web site at Interested persons may submit comments by visiting on the DNRC’s Sage Grouse Habitat Program webpage.

The Montana Sage Grouse Oversight Team will host three public hearings on the proposed rule next month. The public can submit comments orally or in writing at the hearings, set for the following dates and locations:

 -- January 6, 2016, 3 p.m., Malta, MT, First State Bank, 1 South 1st Street East.

 -- January 7, 2016, 2 p.m., Roundup, MT, Ambulance Barn, 704 1st Street East.

-- January 11, 2016, 6:30 p.m., Dillon, MT, Bureau of Land Management office, 1005 Selway Drive.

Those unable to attend a hearing may submit written comment electronically through the online comment form at or by postal mail to Carolyn Sime, Sage Grouse Resource Program Manager, MT Dept. of Natural Resources and Conservation, PO Box 201601, Helena, MT 59620-1601.
