Grants

There are several grant opportunities available to Montana's Family Forest Owners. Typically these grants are delivered through a cost-share program. Generally the landowner applies for a grant to do some forestry related activity on their land. After approval, the landowner contracts with local operators or performs the work themselves Upon completion the DNRC inspects the work and when accepted reimburses the landowner for a portion of the cost. Typically, projects are set up as 75% grant funds - 25% landowner funds, but may vary depending on year and/or practice. Both the State of Montana and the federal governments have cost-share grant program.

Currently the DNRC offers grants through the National Fire Plan (NFP) and the USDA- Natural Resource and Conservation Service (NRCS) offers grants through the - Environmental Quality Incentive Program (EQIP). Both have cost-share opportunities available for activities on forest land. *Forest Land Enhancement Program (FLEP) grants are not currently available.* Examples of practices or projects funded in the past include tree thinning, development of forest stewardship management plans, noxious weed control, reforestation or afforestation (tree planting), wildlife habitat improvement and water quality improvement.
