HELENA, Mont. – In preparation for the November general election, individuals wishing to serve as conservation district supervisors must submit a nominating petitions to the local county election administrator by March 12, 2012, according to Laurie Zeller, Conservation Districts Bureau Chief with the Montana DNRC's Conservation and Resource Development Division.

"Supervisors serve four-year terms and attend monthly meetings to provide oversight of conservation district programs and activities," said Zeller. "Using local knowledge and expertise, conservation districts administer the Montana Streambed and Land Preservation Act, promote youth and adult educational events, and promote projects that conserve or enhance Montana's soil, water, and other natural resources."

To qualify for the election, prospective candidates must live within conservation district boundaries and submit a nominating petition signed by at least 10 registered voters within their district, Zeller said.

Residents interested in serving or learning more about the position can contact their local Conservation District, which is listed in the phone book under county government; they can also contact the Montana DNRC's Conservation District Bureau at 406-444-6667.
