New fire reported in Colorado Gulch

HELENA, MONT. 2:35 p.m. – A three-acre wildfire is currently burning in Colorado Gulch on Helena National Forest land, approximately three miles west of the Helena city limits.

The fire is burning in heavy dead standing timber. No structures are reported threatened at this time and no evacuations have been ordered. Lewis and Clark County law enforcement are responding.

A large contingent of air resources are now on scene: two helitankers, one retardant tanker, one USFS helicopter, one lead plane and one seat. Fire officials say there are no safety zones for ground crews at this time; air attack will be used to wet down forested areas before ground crews can safely access the fire.

Ground crews and other resources currently responding include two USFS engines, one DNRC engine, the Helena Hotshots, Chief Mountain Hotshots, and Baxendale Volunteer Fire Dept. personnel.
