DNRC solicits comments on Bull Mountain coal bid

HELENA, Mont. – The Montana State Board of Land Commissioners (Land Board) today authorized the Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) to solicit public comment on the results of a competitive sealed bid for issuance of a coal mining lease on a 640-acre tract of State school trust land.

The tract is located adjacent to existing permitted mine operations at the Bull Mountain Mine, located in Musselshell County, 12 miles south of Roundup.  One bid was received from Signal Peak Energy, LLC.  Signal Peak is the operator of the Bull Mountain Mine and was the coal lease applicant.  Signal Peak offered a total up-front bonus bid of $3,578,200.  If issued, the coal lease also requires Signal Peak to pay a 10% royalty on all coal removed and sold from the tract.

Bid results and additional information may be viewed online at the DNRC website.

A copy of the information can also be obtained in electronic or printed format by contacting Trevor Taylor (Ph 406-444-9518) or Monte Mason (Ph 406-444-3843), MT-DNRC, PO Box 201601, Helena MT 59620-1601.

Comments should be submitted in writing to “MT-DNRC Bull Mtn Bid Comments” at the address provided above, or by email.  Comments are requested by 5 p.m., September 4, 2012.

The DNRC will collect and review comments received, and will provide all information to the Land Board for consideration at their September Meeting.
