Arbor Day grants help communities celebrate Arbor Day by aiding in the purchase and planting of one or more trees. Arbor Day in Montana occurs on the last Friday in April.

Arbor Day Grant Application Process for 2013

The DNRC Urban and Community Forestry program will use the streamlined Arbor Day Grant process for 2013.  The simplified process, established in 2012, makes the grant easier to apply for, receive, and report results for the grant.

Tree City USA Communities since 2011 will be eligible for a $750 grant.
Any Community can apply for a $300 grant.
Please note that communities must use the new 2013 application forms. Earlier application forms will not be accepted.

Match is not required; however, it is strongly encouraged.  Tracking match information remains important for adhering to United States Forest Service recommendations. Montana Urban & Community Forestry relies heavily on communities to show these additional efforts in order to document the effectiveness of the UCF program in Montana.

The following information outlines the elements of the process:

  • The Arbor Day Grant Application and Contingent Award Agreement form is a combination of your application and your grant agreement.
  • The Arbor Day Grant Application and Contingent Award Agreement will serve as your authorized grant agreement so the terms within this document should be closely examined.
  • Grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis and conditional upon completeness and accuracy of your Arbor Day Grant Application and Contingent Award Agreement form.
  • Upon DNRC approval of your application, DNRC will process payment up-front to the community. This funding can then be used only for the purposes outlined in your Arbor Day Grant Application and Contingent Award Agreement.
  • As noted in the Arbor Day Grant Application and Contingent Award Agreement, you will need to track your expenses and any matching funds used for the grant, along with volunteer hours, number of trees planted, and publicity.
  • In June, DNRC will send out a survey document where the reported information will be used to determine the overall success of the grant. This survey replaces the project report form that was previously used to claim expenses for reimbursement.

Arbor Day Grant funds are considered ‘tree-centric’.  While flowers and other plants are, and should be, part of any good landscape design, trees are the only plant materials for which Arbor Day Grant funds should be used.
